Sewing Product Review: Do Non-Slip Stickers Work and are They Worth Buying?

One of my least favorite things to do when sewing is the fabric prep. I don’t really love cutting out all the pieces of fabric because it seems to take FOREVER.  I always use my clear acrylic sewing ruler and a rotary cutter and if I’m lucky, I’m able to use a clear acrylic template which makes the process much faster.
The concept behind the clear templates is that you can see exactly where you’re cutting on your fabric, and instead of drawing on lines with a fabric marker and then cutting it out, you can just cut along the edges of the template with your rotary cutter. I love being able to do that because it speeds up the process so much.
The one downside to these templates for me is the very real risk of accidentally cutting my hand if the rotary cutter jumps over the template while I’m cutting. In order to prevent such an accident, I tend to press down hard on my template to avoid having it slide all over the fabric because the extra movement makes it even more difficult to keep my rotary cutter in place and away from my hand.
I came across TightGrips Non-Slip Adhesive Rings which are advertised to go on the back of the clear rulers and templates and prevent them from sliding around on fabric. If my template wasn't shifting around, there would less risk of me slicing into my own hand. Sounds like it would solve a problem, and they are inexpensive, but are they worth buying and using at all? Here’s my honest, unpaid, review.

Tight Grips Non-Slip Adhesive Rings Review:

Right out of the package I can tell you the TightGrips are very thin and feel rubbery. For some reason I was expecting them to be sticky, which doesn’t even make sense, but that was my expectation.
I had been worried they would be puffy and make a template sort of stand up and be taller, but they are so thin it isn’t a problem at all.

There are 24 large circles with 24 small circles inside them. I peeled four larger circles off the backing and pressed them into the corners on the back of my square template and pressed them down very well. The backside of the TightGrips have what feels to be a very strong adhesive so they attached to my template very easily.
I could still see the numbers and marks on the other size without any difficulty, so they don’t obscure anything which is great.

As for sliding, once I applied these circles, my template didn’t slide around AT ALL. It stayed rock solid and made it very easy to cut around the template. In addition to making it safer, this also means I got a more accurate cut since the template didn’t shift while I was cutting.

I even tried it on the fabric side of some PUL which is the most slippery, slip slidey fabric I have every used and it didn’t shift around on that either!
Since the adhesive on the back is strong the circles do not move or peel up even when I used my finger to poke and prod at them and I think they are going to stay put for a long, long time.
I am definitely going to apply these handy dandy stickers to all my rulers and templates because I love feeling safer while I cut.
