I was strolling through Hobby Lobby’s seasonal department the other day, checking out all the Valentine’s decorations - as one does - and came across some heart patches I loved. I stood there for a minute trying to think of something I could use them for because darn if the patterns on them weren’t the cutest, but a project didn’t come to mind. Then, in a brilliant flash, I decided why not make a hat with a combination of the two patterns since I liked them so much?
I decided the best course of action was to crochet a hat for my 9-year-old daughter who just happens to love matching clothes with her 18-inch dolls. One thing led to another and now I have patterns for checkered Sweetest Sweetheart Hats that fit a child, and their doll.
Let's jump right in!

Worsted medium weight size 4 yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Red and Pink.
Optional:
Clover Pom-Pom Maker Set – I used the 3 3/8-inch size to make the child-sized pom-pom, and the 1 3/8 size to make the doll-sized pom-pom.
Â
Yardage:
Child-sized hat
Color A - 132 yards
Color B – 51 yards
Doll-sized hat
Color A - 41 yards
Color B – 20 yards
Â
Stitch Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Sc blo – single crochet in the back loop only
Dc – double crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
Dc2tog – double crochet two together – yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull though two loops (three loops still on the hook), yarn over and pull through remaining three loops.
Sc2tog – single crochet two together – insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop (three loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all three loops.
Notes:
Yarn colors – Whichever color you use to create the brim will be referred to as color A. The secondary color used for the checkered pattern will be referred to as color B.
When changing colors with double crochets – start the dc as usual by yarning over, inserting the hook into the next stich and pulling up a loop, yarn over and pull through the first two loops, place second color of yarn over the hook and pull through the last two loops with the new color. Continue new stitches with the new color.
When changing colors with single crochets – start the sc as usual by inserting the hook into the next stitch and pulling up a loop, place the second color of yarn over the hook and pull through the two loops on the hook with the new color. Continue new stitches with the new color.
If you want to make a different sized hat, the brim needs to have a number of rows divisible by 8 so the pattern lines up.
The ch 2 at the start of the row for the child-sized hat DOES count as a stitch.
The ch 1 at the start of the row for the doll-sized hat DOES NOT count as a stitch.
To keep the two yarns from tangling when changing back and forth, lay down each color to the same direction each time when switching - either forward or back. For example, I chose to lay the red toward the back and the pink toward the front each time I was dropping that color to work with the other.
Carry the unused color of yarn behind the stitches while working.

Make Pom-Poms for the Sweetest Sweetheart Hats:
Use the Clover Pom-Pom Maker to create a pom-pom for either hat. I used the same color as the brim of each hat. Watch the video tutorial for making the pom-poms here.
Use the long tail at the top of the hat to sew the pom-pom to the top.
If you want to add some sparkle to the pom-pom, use a fabric sponge paint brush to dab gold glitter fabric paint onto the ends of the pom-pom. Let it dry and fall in love with the glitter.
You could add the glitter before you sew on the pom-pom as I do in the video tutorial but sewing it on first makes it easier to hold while painting and letting it dry.
Â
Adding Glitter to the Sweetest Sweetheart Hat:
You can use permanent fabric glue to glue a glitter heart to the front of the hat too. I used the 2-inch heart for the child-sized hat and the 1.38-inch heart for the doll’s hat.
I hope you love this hat as much as I do. It's just so cute when kids and their dolls match! I'm going to enjoy crafting matching items for them as long as my daughter will let me.
