Check Out My Top 12 Ways to Use Felties in Craft Projects

Twelve different craft projects that use felties including a crocheted hat, coffee sleeve, snack bag, bookmarks, pencil toppers, magnets, hair clips, badge reel and notepad holders.

Have you discovered the fun that is felties yet? Once you get started with felties, there's no going back because they are endlessly versatile. Felties are small, embroidered designs that are backed with felt. They tend to be about 1 ½ inches to 2 inches in size and can be used for so many craft projects.

And, if you go to Etsy you can purchase countless styles and themes. If you have an interest, hobby, occupation, favorite character or show, chances are pretty good you can find a feltie to go with it.

There are so many fun ways to use felties and I thought I'd share my top 12 favorite ways to incorporate them into your crafting. Let's jump right in!

While each of the projects below requires a few different supplies, there are a couple things you will need for all of them.

OR

Let's Get Started Crafting with Felties:

Hands cutting off excess fabric from an embroidered feltie that looks like a Mickey Mouse cupcake.

In many cases the felties I have ordered came “uncut.” They are a bit cheaper that way and it just means that the embroidered design has not been cut away from the excess fabric around it.

To begin all but the keychain or ornament, use your fabric scissors to cut around the shape of the feltie cutting close to the stitches but don’t cut the stiches themselves.

Make a Bookmark With Two Felties:

Hands putting a bookmark made with ribbon and two felties into a book.

I LOVE bookmarks and this project makes one of my favorite types. The two felties hang out of the either end of the book and because they have a tiny bit of weight to them, they hold the bookmark in place. This size will fit paperbacks on up to hardcovers too!

Supplies:

Hands using a Sharpie to trace a cut Mickey Mouse cupcake feltie onto a piece of white felt.

To make one, trace the shape of your cut feltie onto a piece of felt and use fabric scissors to cut it out.

Hands placing a piece of cut white felt onto the back of a feltie with black ribbon between the two.

Position one end of the ribbon on the back of the feltie. Apply permanent fabric glue to the back side of the cut piece of felt and lay it on top of the back of the feltie, trapping the end of the ribbon between the two.

Repeat this process for the other end of the ribbon with a second feltie.

I add a bit of glue between the feltie and the back of the ribbon to make sure it will be secure.

Let the glue dry and your new bookmark is ready for use!

Make a Planner Clip/Bookmark with a Feltie:

Eleven planner clips made with felties in various shapes and jumbo paperclips.

I made myself a year’s worth of planner clips with felties so I could switch them out each month. The paperclip portion just slides over the top edge of your planner or book page and the fun feltie sticks out the top. I'm telling you, they are the cutest darn things!

Supplies:

Hands pointing to a piece of green felt that matches the back of the planner clip next to it along with a gold jumbo paperclip.

All you need to do is position a jumbo paperclip on the center of the back of the feltie and glue a matching chunk of felt over it with hot glue or fabric glue. Once the glue is dry the planner clip is done!

Make Hair Clips with Felties:

A woman with a silver rose hair clip made from a feltie in her hair.

Hair clips were the first thing I made with felties because there were just so many options my little girl was dying to put in her hair. We bought a few doubles of the felties so we could make matching sets of clips which worked out great.

Supplies:

All you really need to do is hot glue an alligator clips to the back of the feltie, but I like to cover the clip with ribbon first to give it a slightly more polished look.

I cut myself slightly less than 7 inches of ribbon. Next, I open up the clip and apply hot glue to one side of the clip beginning closest to the hinge. I add one end of the ribbon to the glue and press down.

Next, I add glue to the top of the clip running back toward the hinge and add the ribbon. I then add hot glue to the outside of the hinged area and apply the ribbon.

Hands pointing to the inside of an alligator clip covered in ribbon that is attached to the back of a feltie to make a hair clip.

I continue by adding glue to the bottom of the clip and then open it back up to add glue and ribbon the second side of the interior. This means I start and end with the ribbon on the inside of the clip.

While the glue is cooling/drying, clip a pencil or paintbrush between the two sides of the clip so the glue doesn't end up adhering to itself.

All that's left to do is glue the ribbon-covered clip to the back of the feltie!

Jazz Up a Badge Reel With a Feltie:

Hands holding a badge reel with a circle feltie glued to the front.

If you or someone you know uses a badge reel, glueing on a feltie is the fastest way I know to liven them up. A little hot glue and that badge reel is ready with a laugh or a little holiday pizazz. Just make sure the feltie is wide enough to cover the badge reel from the front.

These are great for teachers and anyone in the medical industry because they tend to utilize this kind of reel a lot for their identification and security tag.

Supplies:

Turn a Feltie into a Pin:

Hands holding a blank pin back in one hand and a pin glued to the back of a black heart shaped feltie in the other.

I love collecting pins and making a pin out of a feltie only requires using hot glue to adhere a feltie to the front of a pin blank. In minutes you can have a pin ready to go! Just make sure the feltie is large enough to cover the entire pin blank so you don't see it from the front.

Supplies:

Turn a Feltie into a Magnet:

Two magnets made with felties that look like a Target Spot dog with anters, and a gingerbread squishmallow magnetized to a steel surface.

Fun magnets only require a feltie, magnet, and glue. Apply hot glue to the back of the magnet, position it on the center of the back of the feltie and press down.

You only have to wait until the glue is cooled to use it on any metal surface!

Supplies:

Felties Make Coffee Sleeves Even Better:

Hands holding a coffee tumbler and pointing to four crocheted coffee sleeve and one sewn coffee sleeve all with felties attached to the front.

A crocheted or sewn coffee sleeve protects hands from hot drinks and adds fun and color to your daily morning beverages.  I have a whole pile for all the months of the year and a feltie on the front somehow make them even better.

Supplies:

Once you have finished crocheting or sewing a coffee sleeve, use hot glue to attach the feltie to the coffee sleeve.

Add a Feltie to a Hat:

Two hats - one gray crocheted one with a rainbow heart feltie on it and one knit black hat with a gingerbread Minnie Mouse feltie on it.

One of my favorite things to crochet are hats because they work up quickly, look great, and are useful. Plus, everyone needs one, so I feel comfortable creating one for everyone on my list.

Adding a feltie to the front of a handmade hat adds such a great touch and only takes a few minutes. And if you don't crochet or knit, felties look fantastic on a store-bought hat too!

When the hat itself is finished (or you have purchased one), use permanent fabric glue to affix the feltie to the front of the hat. I like to put them on the brim of the hat, but they will work great in the center too.

Once the glue is dry the hat is ready to be worn!

Supplies:

Felties Work Great on Snack Bags:

Hands holding a small pink, purple and blue galaxy colored pouch with a heart shaped soccer ball on the front.

These little pouches are ridiculously fun to make and can be used for anything. In our house they made with food grade material and hold the daily school snack. Wash them up to reuse and repeat. My daughter loves these!

Supplies:

I sew on the felties after I have attached the top and bottom exterior pieces together – about the same time in the process you would add a bag tag. Just sew around the outside of the feltie and it’s ready to go!

Notepad Covers Are Even Better With Felties:

Hands holding two Moondance Notepad holders. One is a multi-colored with a sun feltie attached and one is Bluey fabric with a Bingo feltie attached.

I have mentioned before how much I love making lists. I have lists for just about everything and they are a major organizational tool for me. I have made so many Moondance Notepad holders for myself and others because they look great and keep all of your notes and lists in one handy spot. Adding a feltie to the front of the cover just makes me love them even more.

After you sew the notepad cover, just use fabric glue to add the feltie finishing touch!

Supplies:

Make Ornaments and Keychains with Felties:

Hands holding two ornaments and one keychain made with snowman and gingerbread Squishmallow felties.

For quick and easy ornaments or keychains, all you really need to do is punch a hole in the feltie and attach ribbon for an ornament, or a keyring for a keychain. For a more polished look you can add a grommet. Either way, any cute feltie will look great on a Christmas tree or hanging from your keys. For a full tutorial, go here.

Felties Can Be Pencil Toppers:

A hand holding a pencil with a Disney castle snowglobe feltie as a pencil topper.

Pencil toppers are a fun little add to any automatic or regular pencil. They slide on easily and can be made in moments.

Supplies:

To make one, trace the shape of your cut feltie onto a piece of felt and use fabric scissors to cut it out.

Apply hot glue to three of the edges of the cut felt leaving the side at the bottom with no glue.

Lay the felt onto the back of the feltie and gently pat the edge down against the back of the feltie. Once the glue is cooled you will have an opening at the bottom to slide a pencil into.

I hope this gives you some good ideas for using felties. If you have any more, I'd love to hear them! Please put them in the comment box down below.
