Use Fun Felties to Make Ornaments or Keychains in Just Minutes

Snowman and gingerbread girl felties made into ornaments and a keychain with grommets.

Have you fallen down the rabbit hole that is felties yet? A few years ago, I had no idea these things existed and once I found them, I was sold. They are small, embroidered designs backed with felt. And there are SO MANY OPTIONS AVAILABLE. I buy mine from Etsy and it's easy to find characters, hobbies, interests, jobs, memes – I’m telling you, if you are interested in it, there’s probably a feltie to go with it.

Felties are about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches in size and can be used for so many craft projects. Today I'll show you how to use them to make ornaments or keychains with just a few supplies.

  • Felties – I have ordered felties from a few different Etsy shops. You want to order them UNCUT.

Add a Grommet to a Feltie:

Hands using a pair of hole punch pliers to create a hole at the top of a gingerbread girl feltie.

Use 4.5 mm hole punch to make a hole above the top of the design fairly close to the stitching.

You could just leave it like this, tie a ribbon through it for an ornament or attach a keyring for a keychain and call it good.

For a more finished looking ornament or keychain, add a grommet.

Hands holding an uncut snowman feltie to place the front of a grommet through a hole punched just above the feltie stitching.

Insert the two pieces of the grommet through the hole with the top piece (the larger one with the post) on the front of the feltie, and the flat disc on the back of the feltie.

Hands holding the back of an uncut feltie with the back of a silver grommet showing.

If you’re using a Kam Snap Table Press, get it ready by putting the adapter into the bottom of the press, dropping the portion of the die with no screw rings into the adapter, and screwing the top portion of the die into the top of the press.

Hands placing an uncut feltie into a Kam Snap Press to install a silver grommet.

Place the feltie and grommets into the press with the BACK SIDE UP. You should be looking at the flat metal ring. Press down on the press handle and your grommet is ready to go.

Hands using fabric scissors to cut around an uncut snowman feltie with a silver grommet installed just above the feltie stitching.

Use your fabric scissors to cut around the feltie and the grommet getting pretty close to the stitching but not cutting it.

Hands holding an ornament from the side to show the gap created when tying ribbon to use a hanging loop.

From here the directions are different for ornaments and keychains.

Make a Feltie Ornament:

If you are making an ornament, cut a length of ribbon about 10 inches long, insert one end into the grommet and tie it to the other end leaving a 2-inch gap to use for hanging.

Hands using a lighter to burn the cut edges of a bow made with ribbon to prevent fraying.

Lightly burn the cut edges of the ribbon to prevent fraying.

Hands placing a bow at the top of an ornament made with a feltie.

Tie a small bow and hot glue it over the grommet and your ornament is done!

Hands using a jump ring opening tool and a pair of needle nosed pliers to open a jump ring.

Make a Feltie Keychain:

To make a keychain, use two needle nosed pliers or one pair of pliers and a jump ring opening tool to open a jump ring.

Hands using a jump ring opening tool and a pair of needle-nosed pliers to close a jump ring that is attached to a key ring.

Slide the jump ring through the grommet and through a keyring and reverse the process to close the jump ring. That's it! It really is very easy and quick.

I hope you have so much fun creating with felties. They are one of my new obsessions and I just love finding new ways to utilize them.
