Easily Crochet the Sweetest Piglet Onto A Baby Blanket

Crocheted pink pig applique attached to a crocheted blanket.

I have another free pattern that works great on the Cuddle Buddies Baby Blanket! In addition to the cow, calico cat, bunny and bear, we now have the sweetest little piglet.

There are video tutorials for every step of this pattern, and it is very beginner friendly. Let's jump right in!

Watch the video tutorial here:

Supplies:

Gauge:

Not important for this project. If your pig's face is a little larger or a little smaller, it will still fit wonderfully.

Yardage:

Soft Pink – 26 yards

Pink – 10 yards

Black – small amount

White - small amount

Stitch Abbreviations:

mc – magic circle

ch - chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

Notes:

  • The ch at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.

  • Sl st to the first stitch of the row, not the chain.

  • The first stitch of the row SHOULD be in the same stitch you slip stitched into.

Pig’s Snout Pattern

Hands holding a crochet magic circle that has been closed part way.

E 3.5 mm hook

With Pink yarn

row 1 - mc and place 7 sc in the mc, sl st to the first sc, ch 1 (7). Use the starting tail to pull the mc MOSTLY closed. Turn your work so you are working back along the stitches you just made.

row 2 – 2 sc in each stitch, ch 1 (14) Turn your work.

row 3 - sc in each stitch (14) DO NOT TURN YOUR WORK. Tighten up the magic circle one more time and use a yarn needle to weave in your starting end so the magic circle is locked shut.

row 4 – Work these stitches along the bottom edge – 3 sc, sc in the center of the mc, 3 sc (7)

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing the snout onto the head.

Using the Soft Pink yarn and a yarn needle, embroider nostrils onto the snout. I thread the yarn through the top and bottom holes for each nostril four times. Do not cut the yarn after working on one nostril and begin working on the second. Tie the ends together after both nostrils are finished and you don't bother weaving in these ends. They will be between the snout and the head.

Pig's Ears Pattern

Hands holding a pink crocheted triangle to make into an appliqued pig's ear.

Make two

With Soft Pink yarn

Ch 2

row 3 – 1 sc into each stitch, ch 1, turn your work (4)

row 4 – (1 sc, 2 sc in the same stitch) x 2, ch 1, turn your work (6)

row 5 – 1 sc into each stitch, ch 1 (6)

Turn your work slightly so you will be working down the side.

row 6 – Starting in the same stitch as your last sc – 5 sc, (you will be at the top of the ear), ch 1, turn so you will be working down the second side – starting in the same stitch as your last sc – 5 sc (10 sc and 1 ch)

Finish off leaving a long tail to sew the ears onto the blanket.

Pig's Eyes Pattern

Find a step-by-step video tutorial here.

Make 2

B 2.25 mm hook

With Black yarn

Mc and place 6 sc in the mc, sl st to the first sc (6)

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing onto the head. Tighten the magic circle and weave in the starting end.

Use White yarn and a yarn needle to add a “sparkle” to the eyes.

Assembling The Pig Applique

Use a yarn needle and the tails left from each of the body parts to sew the pieces onto one another and the blanket.

1.     Sew the snout onto the head.

2.     Sew the eyes on above the snout with about 3-4 open stitches between.

3.     To add the white on the outside of the eye, cut about 12 inches of White yarn. Using a yarn needle, bring the end of the White yarn up through the back of the head just under the top edge of the eye in the center. Now thread the other end just under the bottom of the eye and about one stitch to the outside of the eye through to the back of the head. Use your nail or the yarn needle to “flip” the piece of White yarn to the outside edge of the eye. Tie the two ends of the White on the back being careful not to tighten so much that it pulls it under the eye completely.

4.     Sew the head onto the blanket block. I like to place this near one of the block joins so the hooves can "hold" onto the frame.

5.     Sew the ears on with the outside edge folded inward.

6.     Sew the hooves onto the blanket with the back edge overlapping the pig’s head just a bit.

I hope you have fun sewing this sweet little piglet onto a Cuddle Buddies Blanket or any other crochet project.
