This time of year it seems to me like every other person I talk to either sick or has a sick family member in the house. And being sick is no fun at all. I often want to take get well gifts or a meal into a sick family. One of my favorite options is a Little Bag of Sunshine which is quick, easy, and fun. It's a way to 'brighten” someone's day.
But, sometimes I want to gift something a little more substantial. In those cases, one of my favorite things to give is a crocheted basket full of get-well goodies.
In addition to all the good stuff inside, the basket itself is cute and useful which I think is a total win-win. And, the free pattern for this basket is INGENIOUS! I love me some crocheted baskets, but this one is my favorite because it has a lot of what I would call “structure.”
Rebecca over at Yarn + Chai created this pattern and it uses plastic canvas inside the basket itself so it stays upright with just the right amount of stiffness. And there are sooooo many uses for them! I keep one on my sewing table to hold all of my sewing clips. My mom requested THREE of them in different colors to hold various items for HER sewing table after I told her how awesome they are. Any small item can be stored inside and displayed and if you want a bigger basket there's a pattern for a larger basket as well. Think toiletries, hair ties and bows, candy, small toys, crochet or other craft supplies .... the list is endless.
And these baskets can be filled with good stuff for birthdays, just because gifts, teacher gifts – you name it. It makes whatever you're giving even better because it's a double gift.
Here are just a few ideas for filler for any occasion:
Tea
Honey for the tea
Mug
Emergen-C packets
Small packet of tissues
Cough drops
Chocolate of any kind
Fuzzy socks or slippers
Small bubble bath
Bath Salts
This adorable Pocket Hug from Crochet To Play. Can't you just think of a ton of ways to use this adorable thing?! And, the pattern is free and so is the printable to attach it to!
Candle
Lip balm
Lotion
Hair ties
Sanitizer
Gum
Pens
Coasters or “mug rugs”
I'm sure you can think of a thousand more things to put into a gift basket. You can load the whole thing up into a gift bag or cellophane bag, tie it up with some ribbon and you're set.
As for the basket itself, I couldn't find any of the yarn locally that she recommended so each time I have made one of these baskets I hold two strands of worsted weight yarn together instead. I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in Gray Mist for the basket in the pictures.
