A Horse Applique Might Be Just What You Need for Your Next Crochet Project

A crocheted horse applique attached to a blue and yellow crocheted blanket.

It's time for the ninth and final animal applique pattern for the Cuddle Buddies Blanket! I think any blanket would be adorable with just one of these appliques on it, but with all nine it is just the sweetest baby blanket ever.

A horse will be joining all the other patterns - cow, pig, bunny, bear, sloth, monkey, cat and koala - and I just love him.

Let's jump right in!

Supplies:

This may contain affiliate links which means at no extra cost to you I may receive a commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links.

  • G 4 mm hook - these are my absolute favorite crochet hooks.

  • Yarn – size 4 worsted weight yarn. I used I Love This Yarn in Cinnamon, White and Black.

  • Darning needle

  • Scissors

Gauge:

Not important for this project. If your horse's face is a little larger or a little smaller it will still fit wonderfully.

Yardage:

Cinnamon – 15 yards

White – 6 yards

Black – 3 1/2 yards

Stitch Abbreviations:

mc – magic circle

ch - chain

sl st – slip stitch

sc – single crochet

Notes:

The ch at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.

Sl st to the first stitch of the row, not the chain.

The first stitch of the row SHOULD be in the same stitch you slip stitched into.

Horse's Forelock (Bang) Pattern

Ch 7

Starting in the second ch from the hook, sl in the next 3 stitches, 2 sc in each of the next 3 stitches (9 stitches including the slip stitches).

Finish off and leave a long tail on one of the forelock pieces. Weave in all the other ends.

Assemble the Horse Applique:

The head and muzzle of a crocheted horse applique being sewn together with a yarn needle.

Use a yarn needle and the tails left from each of the body parts to sew the pieces onto one another and the blanket.

  1. Sew the muzzle onto the head with the top lined up to the top of the head and leaving about two rows hanging off the bottom of the head.

  2. With Black yarn embroider nostrils, mouth, and eyes onto the muzzle and head. Use White yarn to add eye whites.

  3. Sew the head and muzzle onto the blanket. I like to place this near one of the joins on the block.

  4. Sew the ears onto the head with about 8 stitches empty between the two.

  5. Sew the hooves onto the blanket with the back edge overlapping the horse’s head just a bit and so it looks like the hooves are holding the “frame” created from the block joins.

  6. Sew the forelocks into place in the center of the top of the head using just the one yarn tail you left.

I hope you have a ton of fun attaching this little guy to your blanket or other crochet projects. I'd love to see your work so please tag me on social media.
